Gouache love...

I have a bit of a 'love/hate' relationship with gouache. I have very strong memories of learning to use it at Uni and being so frustrated with it. I just didn't understand it, and ended up failing that series of assignments. Now all of these years on I 'get it'! Everytime I use it the smell of the paint takes me back to those frustrating classes. The beauty of it is getting just the right mix of paint and water to create that perfect flowing feel and lovely flat colour. When it's flowing it's wonderful to use. The challenge is keeping the consistency after after hours of using it! That was my night last night, but I have finally finished all of the line art illustrations for BOOK 4 of the new series I am working on. (That leaves two to go!) I have really enjoyed getting back to hand painted artwork, but it can be tiring on the eyes to use the lightbox for so long too. I'd love to do less computer generated artwork and get back to the 'hands on' stuff. There's something special about a hand painted final artwork rather than a final piece printed from the computer - don't you think?

Kitchen antics

We borrowed this book from the library, and it's been so wonderful that we have since bought ourselves a copy online.
I have never made sausage rolls before in my life and I was very proud of how these turned except that I read the fine print on the recipe a little late and realised that the recipe was for 70 sausage rolls!! I see now why they are usually to be found at parties!
The book is designed for children to learning cook, but being the novice that I am in the kitchen, I have found these recipes to be both easy and very tasty! Of course even after slaving away on some great new recipes there's no gurantee that your toddler will eat them, but at least we are trying to mix things up a bit.

Pinterest addiction

As if I don't have enough demands on my time at the moment, I have recently signed up to Pinterest. I must admit that it's way too easy to spend a ridiculous amount of time exploring the gorgeous imagery collected there (time that should be spent doing my freelance work!) but I really REALLY enjoy it. I have always collected images that inspire and motivate me from the internet, but Pinterest makes it so quick and easy to collate them all onto the one location. It's also a great way to discover new websites and to revisit some old favourites. Click on my 'Follow me on Pinterest' button in the side bar if you want check out what I have been pinning there!

Cold starts

Mental note - 'In future, wait for the sun to melt the ice before taking child to the park!'....yes that IS ice on her bum!

In all of my frustration at not being able to share my current projects with you, I had forgotten THIS new book was due off the printing presses!
My advance copy has just arrived in the mail today. I am so happy with it. The colours are wonderful. (Once again please forgive my dodgy photos - I am in the process of learning how to improve them.) Here's a bit of a sneak peek. I have also included some artwork files just to show you how the colours really look.
This page had a few tweaks made to it before it went to print....
Some of you may notice that this is a slightly different style from my usual work. I have been working in the toddler and baby section for so long that I was a bit rusty on the older kids style. Fortunately my wonderful publishers were patient enough with me to coax this lovely work from me and I am very proud of this one.
Oh, and look. There's even a mention of my previous book in the back of this one. Makes me feel like a 'real' illustrator...sometimes I forget! Type Summary Here Type the rest here
